Mid-Morning: Ride the Historic Chain Ferry & Climb the Dunes
Hop aboard the Saugatuck Chain Ferry, the only remaining hand-cranked chain ferry of its kind in the U.S., departing from Water Street and crossing the Kalamazoo River. Bring your bikes if you like!
- Cost: approx. $3 per adult; $1 for children 3-10; free under 2.
- Note: Runs roughly Memorial Day through Labor Day (weather permitting).
- Once you disembark, you’ll find the entrance to Mount Baldhead Park, where you can climb the ~303 wooden stairs to the summit for panoramic views of the river valley and Lake Michigan beyond.

- Tip: Reservations are NOT accepted. However, Forest Inn management can arrange for you to be seated at whatever time you’d like. Just notify them before 4:30pm the day of.
Pumpernickel’s (Farm-to-table rustic-chic)
- Location: 202 Butler St, Saugatuck.
- Style & menu: American fare with a local-farm emphasis—ideal for guests who appreciate ingredient transparency and a slightly laid-back upscale vibe.
- Tip: Reservations recommended. Open seating at the bar, a great place to dine!
